Scampton
St John the Baptist Church is one of the churches which make up the Springline Parish. The church, The Dambusters Inn and Scampton Church of England Primary School together form the centre of community life in the village, working well together.
As the official church of RAF Scampton we have close ties with the base. And have lots of memorabilia from when the base closed in the early 90’s and from RAF Swinderby. Our churchyard contains numerous war graves, graves of those who have died in peacetime, but had at sometime served at RAF Scampton. There are also eight German graves – for nine people who died in a plane crash near the village!
We have two commemorative rose gardens, one for Sgt. John Hannah VC. Eighteen years old at the time of his Victoria Cross action, Hannah was the youngest recipient of the medal for aerial operations and the youngest for the Second World War. The other is to commemorate in 2018, 100years since the end of the Great War and the founding of RAF Scampton. Although the airbase opened as RAF Brattleby in 1916 it was renamed Scampton in 1918.
Our church is lively and exudes a feeling of warmth and friendliness. A popular Family Service is held on the first Sunday of the month at 10.15am where everyone is welcome. As a result of the success of this service, in March 2019 eleven children received pre-confirmation holy communion from the Bishop of Grimsby and we now have a family communion service at 4.00pm on the third Sunday of the month. These are forward looking services appealing, not only to youngsters but to their parents, who are not necessarily churchgoers.
There is a monthly Sunday Eucharist (CW), at 9.30am on the third Sunday and a weekday Eucharist held on Monday morning at 10.00am.
St John the Baptist is a Grade II* listed building which is in the process of having major repairs to the roof. There are plans for major re-ordering of the church, to include a toilet, kitchen area, lighting and heating and also to refurbish the bells, so that they can be rung again. This is to encourage wider use by the community.
Most excitingly, to celebrate 100 years of collaboration with the RAF, we have commissioned a stained-glass window, which is being funded by crowd funding, which is due to start early in August 2019. Ultimately, with the planned closure of the base by 2022, we would like to have a RAF Heritage Centre.
We realise that we have a challenge ahead of us but if Joshua can do it so can we!
